Greetings from Conference Central!
Over the next few weeks we will be announcing more details about the 2011 Truman Scholars Conference in Washington DC, July 22-24!
I am excited to serve as the conference director and look forward to planning a conference with something for everyone! We took to heart your feedback from both the 2009 conference and the recent conference survey and will try to incorporate many of your ideas.
For instance, we know that having enough time for networking and “catching up” is very important. We also know that keeping costs down is a priority. Fortunately, we have landed a great deal at the beautiful OMNI Hotel in DC. Not only will our conference be located at the OMNI, but they are offering room rates of $165 per night to conference attendees. More information will follow in the coming weeks including how to book your rooms.
The OMNI is also offering that great rate for three days prior to the conference and three days after the conference, so we encourage you to consider building your vacation around the conference! One of the things I’m currently working on is a discount with a DC tour operator for families, spouses, significant others and friends who may be travelling with you and won’t be attending the conference sessions on Saturday and Sunday (conference ends at noon). So you may want to consider bringing your family.
The conference begins with a big Gala Banquet on Friday night and we anticipate selling additional tickets to this event for spouses, significant others and guests. Our guest of honor and keynote speaker will be newly elected Senator (D-DE) Chris Coons (DE ’86), our fellow Truman Scholar. This will be an exciting time to hear about what life as a U.S. Senator is like!
We are extending a special invitation to all scholars that were selected pre-1990, so if you know any, please help us make sure to connect with them. The TSA Board is working on collecting updated contact information on all Scholars so help us spread the word about the conference and getting connected to TSA.
We have many surprises in store for you at the conference and I think you will find it is an event not to be missed! On behalf of the Truman Scholars Association Board of Directors we look forward to seeing you there.
